[April 27, 2001] "The bibteXML DTD expresses an XML markup similar to the BibTeX language specified for LaTeX, or actually its content model. For documentation on BibTeX, see this URL. This DTD is a modified version of the original SGML DTD by Vidar Bronken Gundersen (email@example.com). Since the contact URLs in the original file do not seem to be valid anymore, and since I could not find a BibTeX like XML bibliography markup, I decided to adapt the SGML DTD."

BibDB is a program for creating, maintaining and updating literature reference libraries, in a format which is compatible with BibTeX, the standard LaTeX bibliography reference format. BibDB implements a user friendly, point-and-shoot type, mouse-oriented (if available) interface. BibDB also enables extensive search and pattern matching to be carried out. BibDB is highly configurable, to fit personal taste and different bibliography styles.

The xbibtex utility provides an X Window interface for inserting entries into a bibliography database in bibtex format. xbibtex provides a template of the required and optional fields for each entry type defined by \bibtex. In addition, xbibtex accommodates two additional entries named ``keyword'' and ``annote'' for maintaining an annotated bibliography. The user enters the information to be stored in the database; xbibtex automatically inserts the entry in the bibliography file in a format that conforms to bibtex's specifications. bibprocess allows one to merge the contents of user-defined fields into a .bbl file produced by bibtex; bibsearch allows one to retrieve the latex key of publications that contain user-specified keywords. The famous editor Emacs provides a special major mode for editing BibTex files. The BibTeX mode simplifies generation of new biblography entries as well as modification of existing .bib files. It comes as bibtex.el, a package written in Emacs Lisp and protected by the GNU General Public License (GPL). The current version should work with emacs-20.x.
I'm sorry that this list has been out of date for so long. I'm going to work up a new one by the end of January 96. [Well, it looks like jury duty has messed up those plans. Dana Jacobsen. (See also this introduction).
Hypatia's bibliography format is that used by BibTeX, the bibliography utility associated with the document preparation system LaTeX, now the academic standard for type-setting research papers and books in the mathematical sciences. However this format was previously used by a (now obsolete) program called SCRIBE, and there is nothing specific to LaTeX about it. Since it has a simple "keyword=value" syntax, it would be easy to translate from this format to many others, Indeed, Hypatia translates it into HTML (without using BibTeX). If you would like to translate bibliography files into some other format, you may like to use prettybib to parse the BibTeX format.
