The Go-Lab project will open up remote science laboratories, their data archives, and virtual models (“online labs”) for large-scale use in education. Go-Lab enables science inquiry-based learning that promotes acquisition of deep conceptual domain knowledge and inquiry skills and directs students to careers in science. For students (10 to 18-years old), Go-lab offers the opportunity to perform personalized scientific experiments with online labs in pedagogically structured and scaffolded learning spaces that are extended with social communication facilities. For teachers, Go-Lab offers pedagogical “plug, share, and play” through a Web-based interface and a community framework to disseminate best practices and find mutual support. A modular approach and inquiry classroom scenarios promote a seamless incorporation of online labs into the classroom. For lab-owners, Go-Lab provides open interfacing solutions to easily plug in their online labs, construct their virtual didactic counterparts, and share them in the Go-Lab federation of online labs. Go-Lab will thus promote their scientific activities. The project starts with a set of online labs from worldwide renowned research organisations (e.g., CERN, ESA) and then from selected universities and, based on initial in-depth pilots, will gradually improve and expand its series of online labs and associated inquiry learning opportunities with the increasing contribution of teacher and lab-owner communities. More advanced and later versions will be evaluated and validated in large scale pilots. The Go-Lab project throughout Europe will expand the resources for teaching science in schools and provide more challenging, authentic and higher-order learning experiences for students. Its sustainability will come from the opportunity for the larger science education community to add new online labs. An open and Web-based community will capitalize on the ‘collective intelligence’ of students, teachers, and scientists.

IES Cities: Internet Enabled Services for the Cities accross Europe

Duration: 2013-2015
Supported by: FP7, Comisión Europea, CIP-ICT-PSP-2012-6, de modalidad Pilot Type B - CIP-ICT-PSP-P
Funding: 276475 € for UD
Principal Researcher: Dr. Diego López-de-Ipiña (UD part)
Project Manager: Oscar Peña (UD part)
Consortium members: Fundación Tecnalia Research and Innovation, University of Deusto. Deustotech, Bristol City Council, Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC), Toshiba Europe Research Labs, Comune di Rovereto, Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza, Ayuntamiento de Majadahonda, Geko Navsat S.L., Warp Networks, S.L., Amis d.o.o., Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum für Informationstechnik Berlin

IES Cities is the last iteration in a chain of inter-related projects promoting user-centric and user-provided mobile services that exploit open data and user-supplied data. The technical components and achievements of several former European projects will be integrated to assemble an open Linked Data apps-enabling technological platform. Such platform will be deployed in different cities across Europe, allowing the citizens to produce and consume internet-based services (apps) based on their own and external open data related to the cities. Something specially remarkable about IES Cities is that no project before has considered so much the extent of the impact that the users may have on improving the open data in which services are usually based. The user-centred approach is a must for the success of the project. The target groups of the project will be citizens, SMEs, ICT-Developing companies and public administration. IES Cities will provide a user-centric urban apps enabling platform for users in four cities across Europe. Each city will initially test the functionalities of the platform with completely independent services, different at each location, in order to allow the cities and their citizens covering different needs under a common platform. Users will be able to continuously enrich the consumed services with their own data and to have a voice in the proposal and selection of new services to be developed. The set of pre-defined urban services defined is spefic to the cities where they will be deployed since not all cities count with the same data and the same needs for their citizens. These services will target different strategic topics in a city such as mobility, environment, health, culture, knowledge of the cities and so on. The project comprises partners from five different European countries who will deploy and validate the integrated open platform for enabling Linked Data urban apps in cities from three different countries in Europe. The cities involved will be Zaragoza (ES), Bristol (UK), Rovereto (IT) and Majadahonda (ES).

DPs will benefit from mobile technologies for context-creation, maintenance and usage; and from semantic technologies for formal decisions and verifications. Usage of DPs will simplify everyday interaction between users and digital environments and will provide a framework for implementing value-added services for mobile operators.

DomoRIA: Domotic Rich Internet Applications

Duration: 2010
Supported by: Plan +Euskadi09 (UE09+69) - Proyectos de Investigación e Innovación Tecnológica, Departamento de Educación, Universidades e Investigación del Gobierno Vasco
Funding: 51.320 €
Project Manager: Dr. Diego López de Ipiña
Consortium members: DINITEL S.L

The DomoRIA (Domotic Rich Internet Applications) project defines a Web 2.0 platform to abstract and control the devices in a home automation deployment by means of a set of web gadgets integrated in a central control dashboard accessible and adaptable to the physical features of the target client (mobile or fixed). The main goals of the project are:

  • Create a new platform based on RIA and web technologies to universally control the devices at a house.
  • Adapt the control interfaces to the physical features of the devices used by the user following the approach “write an interface once and show it in different devices respecting its appearance and use”.
  • Guarantee the extensibility of the control platform, allowing the new integration of devices following the approach Plug-and-play (PnP).
  • Integrate the control platform which generates RIA interfaces for browsers in devices connected to Internet and mediates with the underlying home automation installation and its protocols. Such platform has to be inserted in small low powered embedded devices.

Sentient Graffiti

Duration: 2007
Suported by: http://www.ctmd.deusto.es/
Funding: http://www.ctmd.deusto.es/
Project Manager: Dr. Diego López de Ipiña

Sentient Graffiti enables mobile users to profit from the benefits of Ubiquitous Computing in uncontrolled environments, only requiring in exchange, the participation in a community of users interested on publishing and consuming context-aware empowered annotations and services. Users annotate objects and spatial regions with multimedia data or web services which are only made available to other users when those match the contextual attributes (location range, period of time, and so forth) previously assigned to the resources. A virtual graffiti can be thought of as a virtual post-it note in the form of an XML document which combines some content (multimedia presentation or web service front-end) with some keywords summarising the content, and some contextual attributes (profile of creator, location, time interval and so on) which restrict who, when and where can those annotations be seen.

TRIP, MobileEye and MobileSense

Duration: 2003-2004
Suported by: Cátedra Telefónica en la Universidad de Deusto(http://www.ctmd.deusto.es/)
Funding: http://www.ctmd.deusto.es/
Project Manager: Dr. Diego López de Ipiña

TRIP (Target Recognition using Image Processing) is a vision-based sensor system that uses a combination of 2-D circular barcode tags or ringcodes (see image below), and inexpensive CCD cameras (e.g. web-cams, CCTV cameras or even mobile phone cameras) to identify and locate tagged objects in the cameras’ field of view. Compared with untagged vision-based location systems, the processing demands of TRIP are low. Optimised image processing and computer vision algorithms are applied to obtain, in real-time, the identifier (TRIPcode) and pose (location and orientation) of a target with respect to the viewing camera.
