I graduated in Psychology from the Education Sciences and Philosophy Faculty in 1985. I won a predoctoral fellowship from the Ministry of Education in 1987 and achieved my Doctorate in Psychology in 1990 with the thesis entitled "Cardiovascular and subjective components of the stress response", achieving the mark of Cum Laude. After getting a job as High Technician in the IFAS (Diputación Foral de Bizkaia), I occupied various management roles between 1991 and 2006. I combined this work activity in the social services of public administration with part-time teaching at the University of Basque Country, the National University of Distance Education, and at the University of Deusto. Since 2006, I have worked full time as teacher and researcher at the University of Deusto.

Drawing from my experience in Social Services, I maintain contact with, knowledge about and interest in different vulnerable groups on which I have focused my teaching and research work: abused women, adolescents with aggressive behavior, depression, etc.

During those times I encourage the creation of the Ethics Committee of Social Intervention of Bizkaia, of which I was Vice President, and to which I still currently contribute.

Since 1991, I have mainly taught two types of subjects: Psychological Intervention and Treatment Techniques and Research Methods, both at the Degree and Postgraduate levels.

I have been the Director of Master in Mental Health and Psychological Therapies and the Director of Deusto International Research School (DIRS), a key part of the research strategy of the University of Deusto, with the mission of promoting the excellent training of new researchers and improving the skills of all researchers. Currently, I coordinate the Honors in Psychology Program.

Because of my interest in psychological research, I created, developed and promoted Deusto Stress Research, a research unit of the University of Deusto focused on vulnerability to stress and various psychological problems that can arise when individuals are facing adversity, such as depression, violence and eating disorders. Our team has been awarded the highest accreditations of excellence in research by the Basque Government in 2016 and has won many grants in competitive bidding processes and various awards for its research.

My research career has led me to strengthen partnerships with excellent researchers at an international level, such  as Todd L. Little (Texas Tech University), David S. Yeager (University of Texas), Benjamin L. Hankin (Denver University), Brad Bushman (Ohio State University) and John H. Riskind (George Mason University). I also maintain collaborative activities with Latin American universities like the University of San Buenaventura (Medellin) and the State University of Mexico (Mexico).

I collaborate with a number of specialized journals both as a member of the Editorial Board and as reviewer; as well as with different agencies and universities in assessment tasks and advice.
