full potential, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) today announced the release
of the XML 1.0 specification as a W3C Recommendation. XML 1.0 is the W3C's
first Recommendation for the Extensible Markup Language, a system for defining,
validating, and sharing

- The W3C has created an Editorial Review Board and Working Group to
build a set of standards to make it easy and straightforward to use SGML on the
Web. The goal of the W3C SGML activity is to enable generic SGML to be served,

- UIUC Digital
Library Initiative
- The Digital Libraries Initiative (DLI) project at the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is developing the information infrastructure to
effectively search technical documents on the Internet. We are constructing a
large testbed of scientific literature, evaluating its effectiveness under
significant use, and researching enhanced search technology. We are building
repositories (organized collections) of indexed multiple-source collections and
federating (merging and mapping) them by searching the material via multiple
views of a single virtual collection. We are placing article files into the
digital library on a production basis in Standard Generalized Markup Language
(SGML) from engineering and science publishers.

coordinated by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and supported by
a supplemental grant by the National Science Foundation.

- Carnegie Mellon Digital
Library Project
- Informedia is a research initiative at Carnegie Mellon University
funded by the NSF, DARPA, NASA and others, that studies how multimedia Digital
Libraries can be established and used. Informedia is building a multimedia
library that will contain over a thousand hours of digital video, and audio,
images, text and other related materials.
- UKOLN: UK Office for Library and
Information Networking
- UKOLN supports the UK library and information communities through
research, network services and awareness raising in the area of network
information management. It is funded by the Higher Education Funding Councils,
through the Information Services Sub-Committee (ISSC) of the Joint Information
Systems Committee ( JISC), and the The British Library Research and Innovation
Centre (BLRIC).
- Stanford Digital
Libraries Project
- The Stanford Digital Libraries project is one participant in the
4-year, $24 million Digital Library Initiative, started in 1994 and supported
by the NSF, DARPA, and NASA. In addition to the ties with the five other
universities that are part of the project, Stanford also has a large number of
industrial partners. Each university project has a different angle of the total
project, with Stanford focusing on interoperability.

- The International Press Telecommunications Council was established in
1965 to safeguard the telecommunications interests of the World's Press. Since
the late 1970's its activities have primarily focussed on developing and

- IGC was forced to suspend the site, as a result of a sustained
campaign of e-mail "mailbombing", a large volume of repetitive email intended
to make our computers unusable. It is only under protest that we suspend the
Euskal Herria Journal site, so
that we can continue to provide basic
Internet services, like e-mail, for our nearly 13,000 subscribers. We call on
organizations and individuals concerned about freedom of expression on the
Internet to stand with us in protest of these tactics, and join the statements
of support below.
