ABSTRACT

Our report will be based in translators machines, in its mistakes and in the errors they commit while doing their job.

We have created our work in New Technologies lessons in the Informatica class room at the University of Deusto. We will decide and let you know by using examples and looking for information in the net which of the translator machines would be the best and more helpful: Systranbox, Reverso or Freetranslator

INTRODUCTION

Our second report, report B, as we have said before, will be developed around the topic of Net-Translators. Those pages in which, by knowing the way in which they work, the user can get to translate into English everything he wishes.

But of course as everything in life, these sort of pages have also got problems and do not always work correctly. Taking into a count that Sytranbox, Reverso and Freetranslator are the pages we have analysed, we are going to look for information, compare and finally state which of the two pages is the best one and the most useful one.

The fact of writing the tonic accent, is very important at the time of translating phrases from Spanish to English, since a pair of phrases which seem identical, are translated in a very different way, depending only on the accent.

CONCLUSION

Translation is not an easy task, it is not just the action of translating word by word. That is why machine translators cannot substitute the work human beings do. This is something we have been able to check after working with some machine translators we have found in the net: Systranbox and Reverso ( we found some problems with Freetranslator.com, so we decided to avoid it).

Actually, we have been surprised by the great number of failures that this kind of translation presents . The main problem is that the machines are not able to give the exact translation of the meaning of a sentence. This is because they are, somehow, limited. But this does not happen because of lack of vocabulary. It is just that they do not have the capacity to understand the meaning of some combination of words and give the proper translation as a person does. This happen because the ability for understandable translation can only be achieved by human beings so far.

Although both translators do not always make a real translation of the sentence, the main problems we have found in "Systran" translator is that articles such as; a, an, the, etc., are misunderstood by the program. Verbs such as barking, pull, etc., are also used in different contexts so, that's why when translating, the translated sentence has a certain similarity to the literal translation but not to the real language we use, the one we have expected to obtain.

We have observed the following weak points of machine traslators:
*Most of the times, the context in which a word is written is not recognized and sentences are translated literally
* Words that the system doesn't understand are not translated.
However, machine translations sometimes work cleverly:
-If a word is unusual but they know it they look for a synonym and translate it.
-If they understand the meaning of the words they distinguish them morfologically, that is, they classify words as verbs, nouns, adjectives...
