  1. ABSTRACT
  2. In this report we will analyse how machine translation systems work on the internet. We have chosen three different translators: El Mundo, Google and Freetranslation. Firstly, we have chosen 20 Spanish sentences, colloquial expressions and proverbs and we have translated them into English. And finally, we have chosen another 20 sentences and expressions in English and we have translated them into Spanish. So, we have compared three translators of the web and have realised that the reliability of the three of them is very low. We have also noticed that the cause of the wrong translation is due to the literal translation these machine translators do, instead of doing a meaming translation. We will do a farther comment of this problem of translation in the introduction and conclusion.

  3. INTRODUCTION
  4. This report is about the machine translation. Machine translators are very useful. They let you get the information you want in the language you choose. However, language itself is very complex and this complexity makes the machine translators be wrong many times. Idioms or words with double meaning are some of the difficulties or problemes a machine translator can have.

In this report we are going to see how those machine translators do they work. We are going to write some proverbs and colloquial sentences in English and in Spanish. Those sentences will be translated from Spanish to English and vice-versa. Later, we will observe the results and get the conclusions.

We have choosen three on-line machine translators; http://translate.google.com/translate_t , http://www.freetranslation.com/ and http://www.elmundo.es/traductor/ . This way, we can compare the translation that each one of them gives. All the sentences have been put in a table, this way we will be able to compare the differences of each answer easier.

The observation of the results and the comparison of the answers are the objectives of this report. We will see why translations are so difficult in a general way.

  7. CONCLUSION

As we can see, El Mundo is the best translator between Freenstranslation, El Mundo and Google. In Google we can find much more problems of ambiguity, and less capacity of translation. In fact, the words which have a double meaning, are the worst translated in Google. Moreover, In Freenstranslation and El Mundo the translation is much more precise. But I would say that in El Mundo the translation is even more precise than in Freenstranslation. In El Mundo we can see more words with parenthesis in case they have a double meaning, in order to choose the meaning corresponding to the phrase. For example: It approved for electrical socket (Freentranslation) It approved by plug (Google), and It(He,She) passed for plug (El Mundo).

In addition, we can also see that El Mundo is the best translating proverbs and popular phrases. For example No por mucho madrugar amanece Mas temprano is translated this way: Not by a great deal rising early wakes up earlier (Freenstranslation) Not by madrugar amanece much more early (Google), and Time must take its course (El Mundo). However, we can say that machine translation still has a lot of failures and communication mismatches.

We have learned that Human Translators are much more reliable than Machine Translators. Anyway, Machine Translators are helpful to avoid language communication barriers existing in human communication.
