ABSTRACT

This is a report that contains some comments on two different translators: Systran and El Mundo. We have been elaborating this report during our English and New Technologies classes at the University of Deusto. We will see the mistakes that these different translators commit when they translate English proverbs or typical expressions, and will discuss the reasons for those mistakes. We will also comment the differences between both machine translators and see which one is better.

INTRODUCTION

The second report of the term is about the work of the Machine Translators. We are going on the explanation of some of the different Machine Translation softwares. We will compare two of the different translators that are nowadays on the net and see if they are good or not. We will also see which one of the translators is the best.

The body of the report is divided into three tables where we have translated some English Proverbs, modisms, expresions and compound words. Below each table we have some comments on each translator and a brief conclusion of the work they have done.

In the conclusion we have discussed wheather the machine translators are a good system or not of translation and have based our ideas on 'Systran' and 'El Mundo'; translators that we have found in the net.

We have also gave at the end of the report a list of references where we have found some of the modisms and proverbs used for this work.

All is fair in love and war Todo es justo en amor y guerra Todo es la feria enamorada y de guerra En el amor y en la guerra todo vale

We can see here, how these translators are not as useful as they should be. In this table, we are translating English proverbs into Spanish and they are supposed to be recognised and not to be translated literally. They are supposed to have their equivalent in Spanish and they do not have it. In spite of the mistakes, we can see that 'El Mundo' is better than 'Systran'.

We can see in this table the same problems that in the table above. Only a few expressions are recognised as they are supposed to be, and that only happens in the 'El Mundo' translations. The 'Systran' ones translate all the modisms and expressions literally with a lot of mistakes, if we take into account their equivalent in Spanish.

In this table we can notice that most of the words are translated correctly. It is because these compound words are registered by the dicctionary of the translator. Although, 'El Mundo' is still more effective than 'Systran' in its translations.

CONCLUSION

As far as we have seen, "El Mundo" translator makes much better translations than the "Systran" one. Although both translators do not always make a real translation of the sentence, "El Mundo" is more resembled to reality. The main problems we have found in "Systran" translator is that articles such as; a, an, the, etc., are misunderstood by the program. Verbs such as barking, pull, etc., are also used in different contexts so, that's why when translating, the translated sentence has a certain similarity to the literal translation but not to the real language we use, the one we have expected to obtain.

"El Mundo" translator has some problems with possessives, it's translations are not aware of them and when translating, the real meaning of the sentence is lost. Nevertheless, we have noticed that its translations are more fixed to our language than the "Systran" ones. The main reason for this may be that, as it is a program, it does not deal with the real human language, though it tries to imitate the language in a more natural way.
